Though the 2010 middle school softball team finished with a 2-8 record on the year, the team showed great improvement from the beginning of the year to the end. On the mound, Laura Kolstad and Ellie Blue kept the team in games by consistently throwing strikes. Angela DeBruzzi also pitched well, throwing a four-inning no-hitter against Brown Middle School of Newton.

In addition, DeBruzzi was a catalyst at the plate, as she hit .458 with 11 runs, 1 triple, 1 home run, and she led in stolen bases. Also leading the hit parade was eighth grader Julia Veitch, who hit .409 for the season.

Along with DeBruzzi and Veitch, the team was led by eighth graders Morgan and Lexi Smith and Cynthia Chen. Next year’s leadership mantle will be worn by seventh graders Meredith Clarke, Katie Hales, Kolstad and Blue.

Sixth graders made up 40% of this year’s varsity team. Maddie Pinard was plugged in at second base, and handled it nicely. Rosie Charnley, Abby Flynn and Carly Chelton played solidly in the outfield. Lucy Hill played 2nd base, outfield, and catcher. Anna Jewell was a jack-of all-trades, playing second base, shortstop, third base, outfield and catcher.

Although the eighth grade members of the team will be missed greatly, they have put in place a foundation for success. As a result of their hard work and good example, the 2011 edition of Carlisle Middle School Varsity Softball is one that is eagerly anticipated. ∆
