Gorecki elected Selectman, all questions passed
John Gorecki won the race for a position on the Board of Selectmen, carrying 482 votes to Larry Bearfield’s 385. It was the only contested race in Carlisle’s Annual Town Election on Tuesday, May 18. All four ballot questions passed. The voter turnout was low at 24.9%, with 884 of the town’s 3550 registered voters participating.
Ballot question 1 authorizing a proposition 2-1/2 debt exclusion for bonding a feasibility study and schematic design for the Concord-Carlisle Regional High School building project passed by a margin of 623 to 238. Question 2 passed 565 to 290, authorizing a debt exclusion for bonding a feasibility study for the Minuteman Technical and Career High School. Voters approved bonding for a new fire truck, 605 to 236, under question 3.
Ballot question 4, the non-binding referendum to the Selectmen on the Community Preservation Act (CPA) surcharge, passed by a margin of 446 to 381. Passage instructs the Selectmen to ask voters at a future Town Meeting and Election whether to reduce the CPA surcharge or rescind the town’s participation in the CPA. However, the Selectmen have received mixed signals, since Annual Town Meeting defeated the same referendum on May 10. Town Administrator Tim Goddard says that the Board of Selectmen has not yet considered how it would react to a mixed result. “It will be for the board to interpret the meaning,” he said. “I guess it will be an interesting discussion at their next meeting.”
The otherwise quiet election ended on a note of excitement, caused by a power outage in the final moments of counting the ballots. During the rainstorm a little before 10 p.m. a tree fell on East Street, bringing down power lines. Many buildings in town were without power for a couple of hours while the wires were repaired. According to Town Clerk Charlene Hinton, the power first flickered in Town Hall briefly, causing her computer to freeze while she was tabulating the results. The computer was restarted and she was able to print out a copy of the results before the power failed completely about ten minutes later. ∆
