CCHS mourns second student death
On Wednesday, April 28, junior Tyler Ryan of Concord, who attended Concord-Carlisle Regional High School (CCHS), took his own life. Principal Peter Badalament notified parents that support was being offered to students and staff in response to the death. He wrote “I know this information will have a significant impact on the students and many of you, as we are all deeply saddened by the news.”
This is the second suicide at the school this year. On the first day of school, Clair Day of Concord committed suicide.
The 2008 Youth Risk Behavior Survey of CCHS students reported that 12% of students had considered suicide and 3.8% of students had attempted suicide at least once in the 12 months before the survey.
Contacted by email last week, Badalament stated, “We have been supporting teachers and staff.” He continued, “We brought in extra counselors from LS [Lincoln-Sudbury High School], AB [Acton-Boxboro High School] and through the NEMLEC STARS [North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, School Threat Assessment and Response System] program, and they were great in helping support groups of grieving students.”
A parent forum was held on May 5 with Harvard educator and adolescent psychiatrist Nancy Rappaport. ∆
