Carlisle School project gets green light

Voters approved the Carlisle School building project at Town Election on Tuesday, April 13, echoing the results of Special Town Meeting last week. Tuesday’s ballot question to authorize bonding the debt passed by a margin of 756 to 289. Turnout was light as only 29% of Carlisle’s 3,641 registered voters made the trip to Town Hall to cast their ballot.

With a total expected cost of $20 million, the project will include the replacement of the Spalding Building with a new building to serve grades preK – 2, as well as repairs renovations to other buildings on the campus. The state has reviewed the design and agreed to reimburse almost $7 million of project expenses, leaving a net cost to the town of approximately $13 million. According to Board of Selectmen Chair Tim Hult, the debt translates to roughly $11,000 per household.

According to the Carlisle School Building Committee’s website they hope to have the detail design phase complete and the project ready for bid by next fall, with construction to begin in the winter of 2011. If there are no unforeseen delays, the plan is for students to occupy the new building in the spring of 2012. Demolition of the old Spalding Building and final site work would proceed over the summer with the goal to have the project complete by the fall of 2012.

Next on the agenda for voters is Annual Town Meeting on Monday, May 10, when taxpayers will be asked to approve the town’s operating budget and other capital expenditures for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Election of candidates running for town government will be held at Town Hall on Tuesday, May 18.
