News from surrounding towns

The following news items were extracted from material available online.

Crime. A 22% increase in domestic violence reports is being estimated in Acton during FY10. Police received 168 reports in FY09. Acton has the highest incidence of the ten towns in the Concord District Court system, while Maynard ranks second, according to the Domestic Violence Services Network. Economy. Westford’s Applebee’s restaurant closed suddenly on February 14. According to Nancy Mays, Executive Director of Communications for the national chain, the Westford restaurant was closed due to “a unique situation” involving a combination of unit performance and resale opportunity.

Environment. The Westford Recycling Commission is targeting a 10% reduction in municipal waste in FY11. It would mean a savings of 840 tons of trash, which would otherwise cost $56,000 to incinerate. The commission plans to educate consumers to reduce waste and raise the charge for curbside disposal of large items from $5 to $10. In addition, the commission will work with the school to reduce waste and increase composting and recycling, with a goal of eliminating school waste entirely. Budgets. The town of Billerica is planning an increase of 1% to their operating budget for FY11. (“Billerica budget proposal is $123.6M,” March 8, www.lowellsun.com.)

The Billerica School District is eyeing faculty cuts and larger class sizes, with the proposed $50 million FY11 school budget only 0.5% above FY10’s level. Roughly a dozen faculty positions will be eliminated, through a combination of attrition and lay-offs. Student fees for sports participation will rise $25 per sport and student parking fees are to increase to $125.
