Teamwork a key to success for girls’ soccer team
The 2009 girls soccer season came to a close with a loss against Concord. Despite a record of three wins and eight losses, first-year head coach David Collins saw the season as a huge success.
“We got a little bit of a late start and had only three practices before playing our first game. Midway through the season we really started to gel as a team,” Collins said.
Outstanding leadership by captains Tori Forelli and Anagha Chandra, coupled with excellent play from eighth-grade players Julia Veitch, Whitney Cook, Abby Wilcox, Meaghan Long, Jessica Kocak, Lauren Rayson, Monica Chen and Haley Proctor led to a very successful season.
Next year, Coach Collins expects big things from the team as he has a strong core of returning players. They include seventh-graders Lindsay Ryder and Suzy Balles and sixth-graders Abby Flynn, Lizzy Robinson, Lexi Thompson, Alex Pascual and Tammy Pascual.
“I really need the sixth- and seventh-graders to step up and take on the leadership roles of the girls who are graduating this year,” Coach Collins said. Asked if he thought next year’s team could improve on this year’s win total, he just smiled and said, “With a little better coaching, I know they can.”
