Police hand out 75 bike helmets

What do you do when you get a big box with 75 bike helmets in it? Carlisle police officer Paul Smith was assigned to the problem when the box with the helmets arrived at the Carlisle Police Station long after anyone remembered applying for the grant that made them materialize. Smith got on the phone to Ferns proprietor Larry Bearfield, who advertised the helmets in his on line newsletter and presto – the problem was solved. More than 75 alert residents brought their young bicycle riders to the station to get a free helmet and the big helmet box emptied. It all happened really fast and all that remains is a sign on the station door telling procrastinators that all the helmets are gone. ∆
