Will schools close?
A major issue that local officials cannot soon resolve involves whether the school will close during the expected wave of H1N1 infections this fall or winter. On August 7 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued guidance to local schools and health departments, suggesting that schools should try to prevent the spread of infection, mainly by ensuring that infected students remain at home rather than by closing the schools entirely. (For the complete CDC recommendations see: www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/schools/schoolguidance.htm.
Carlisle School nurse Kathy Horan and Board of Health Agent Linda Fantasia expect to learn more about how to approach this question at a regional meeting scheduled for this week, after the Mosquito goes to press.
