Planning Board okays Verizon wireless antenna off Bedford Road

Attorney Michael Giaimo, an associate at Robinson and Cole, submitted the special permit application for a “stealth” wireless communication facility by Bell Atlantic Mobile of MA Corp., Ltd. (Verizon Wireless) at the August 3 Planning Board meeting. The proposed new antenna system will be located at the 146-foot elevation inside the previously permitted 189-foot monopole, owned by Bay Communications, LLC at 871 Bedford Road (Map 11, Lot 1). The monopole already contains antennas owned by Nextel/Sprint, Omnipoint/TMobile, ATT/Cingular, and Metro PCS.

Giaimo said that it is company policy to require backup batteries and an electrical generator on site to permit operation in the event of power failure. He said that remote test operation of the generator will take place weekly for about half an hour. This is in contrast with prior applications before the board: backup batteries are common but none have on-site generators.

The board voted to grant the special permit. ∆
