Clean out your bird nest boxes

Do you have bluebird nest boxes on your property? If so, now is a good time to clean out old nest material, and also evict any White-footed Mice that may have taken up residence over the winter. Eastern Bluebirds start nesting soon. They will generally not use boxes filled with stuff from previous years, and will not do the cleaning themselves. If you have seen paper wasps building their nests inside the boxes, you can discourage them by rubbing soap or wax on the upper inside surface of the roof.

Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Tree Swallow and House Wren may also use bluebird boxes. House Sparrows, which also use the boxes, may kill other birds in order to appropriate the nest box. The House Sparrow is not a native species, and it is legal to remove its nest and eggs. You will need to be persistent in your efforts.
