School to start early next September

Families planning end-of-summer vacations might take note that the Carlisle and Concord Public Schools are opening before Labor Day weekend next September. Carlisle will begin on September 2 and Concord-Carlisle High School will start on September 3. Labor Day is on September 7. Carlisle School Superintendent Marie Doyle presented the 2009-2010 school calendar to the Carlisle School Committee (CSC) at their March 4 meeting.

Next year, school vacation breaks are scheduled for November 25 – 27 (Thanksgiving), December 23 – January 1 (Winter Break), February 15 – 19 (February vacation), and April 19 – 23 (April vacation). The Carlisle School is scheduled to end on June 17 (or June 23, given five snow days) next spring.

Committee member Dale Ryder noted that families traditionally plan Labor Day weekend vacations and she wondered if the school could start on September 8 instead. Doyle said the calendar was developed with the Carlisle teachers, who are concerned about having school during the last week of June, especially if there are snow days. Generally, the school tries to start as close to the beginning of the month as possible to avoid ending school in late June. In 2004, school also began before Labor Day. Future Labor Days: September 6, 2010, September 5, 2011 and September 3, 2012. ∆
