Attention drivers: traffic configuration to change in Monument Square

The Concord Police Department has announced a change in the traffic configuration in Monument Square beginning Tuesday, January 6, 2009. A new YIELD sign will be placed on southbound lane of Lowell Road at the intersection with Main Street.

Under the current configuration, many motorists accelerate once through the YIELD sign at the Colonial Inn, driving toward Main Street and Lexington Road. This creates an unsafe situation for pedestrians using marked crosswalks in the immediate area, especially during morning and evening commuting hours.

This change is temporary and part of a larger review of traffic patterns in Monument Square. The reconfiguration will be assessed after a trial period of 60 days.

The Police anticipate that there may be temporary traffic delays on Lowell Road as motorists accommodate to the changes.

The Town of Concord has retained the services of an engineering firm to evaluate traffic patterns in the area. ∆
