Glad to see cyclist rules posted
To the Editor:
I would like to thank the Carlisle police department for posting the signs by the side of our roads that inform cyclists that all bicycle laws will be enforced and asking cyclists to ride single file and be safe.
On numerous occasions I have been surprised by rounding a curve to encounter cyclists riding two abreast ahead of me with a car coming in the opposite direction leaving me no where to go in order to avoid them. I never exceed the speed limit and am extremely aware of the hazards of doing so, namely wildlife at night and thoughtless cyclists in the daytime who should know better.
It is the duty and the responsibility of everyone using the road, cyclists and drivers alike, to keep us all safe by obeying the laws of the road.
Recently there was a letter to the editor from a cyclist protesting those signs claiming they exacerbate the notion that motor vehicle drivers “own the road.” I am happy to share the road with cyclists. I do not understand such a reaction to the signs from a cyclist any more than I would understand a motor vehicle driver reacting to a sign posting the speed limits.
