Monument Street bridge closes May 28

Large electronic signs warn motorists that Concord’s Flint Bridge on Monument Street, just north of the North Bridge parking lot, will be closed for repair beginning May 28. Concord Town Engineer Michael Gorenstein advises Carlisle motorists to seek alternate routes to Concord, preferably via Route 225 to Route 62. He believes the shortest detour, leading from Monument Street via Liberty Street to Concord’s Lowell Road, should be avoided because it will experience heavy traffic delays, “It’s going to be a real mess here.”

The bridge will be completely closed to all vehicle and foot traffic and is not scheduled to reopen until the spring of 2010. Gorenstein said that the repairs will be done by the Massachusetts Highway Department. The decking will be removed and replaced; the bridge will be straightened and the lower structure reinforced. The length of time required is due in part because work must be done during warm months (April 1 – November 15) and may also be delayed when water levels are high. ∆
