Winter sports round-up: Middle School girls basketball

The 2007 – 2008 Carlisle Girls Varsity Basketball team had a tough season this year with a 10-2 record, but they met the challenges by playing their best and having fun.

The team was placed in the Middlesex Athletic League this year, which meant playing many larger schools with stronger teams. No matter which opponent they faced, each girl fought her hardest and gave her best effort throughout every game. The team moved from working on skills in the beginning of the season to organizing an offense and moving the ball around the court, ending the season having learned how to play well as a team.

Team captains, eighth graders Lindsey Verrill and Lauren Tierney, did a wonderful job leading the girls during practices and games. This is the third year that both Lindsey and Lauren have been on the team. They used their skills and experience well to lead the team, running the offense and setting up plays, as well taking command of the defense. Other returning eighth graders included Dakota Dray and Ali Forelli. Both Dakota and Ali were strong on defense, with Dakota being a great rebounder. On offense, Ali used her height to pull down offensive rebounds and make the quick lay up. Eighth graders new to the team were Jordan Ursch, Teresa Ventura, and Isabelle Materne. These players quickly learned how to fit in on the team’s offense and were strong defenders.

Returning seventh graders Maddie Creighton, Belle Hankey, and Mel Lohrer brought with them their strength and experience. Each of these girls has great ball-handling skills and a good sense of the game.

Seventh graders Meghan George, Cairo Thompson, and Michelle Carey were new to the team this year, using their skills to bring strength to the teams’ offense.

Sixth-grade girls Angela DeBruzzi and Molly Koski, added to the team with their ball handling and shooting.

The team would like to thank our manager, Sam Schurr, for her hard work during both home and away games . Thanks also to the dedicated parents for providing wonderful support to the team throughout the season.

We wish our eighth graders well as they move into high school, hopefully using their skills and talents to play there. Next year’s returning team will bring with them lots of strength and experience and can expect a good season. ∆
