CCHS sports roundup

The boys baseball team wrapped up their regular season on May 28 with a tough loss to Burlington, 6-5, and a final regular season record of 11-9-0. The team proceeded to the first round of the Division 2 North playoffs on May 31 but lost 2-1 against Belmont.

The girls lacrosse team finished the regular season with a record of 8-7-1 and took an easy win over Salem on May 28, 17-7, in the first round of tournament play. On May 31 they continued to the Division 1 North quarter-finals where they lost 18-9 to Andover.

The girls softball team went into the tournament with an undefeated record of 20-0. In their first post-season game on June 2 they were upset by Stoneham 4-3 in the Division 2 North quarter-finals.

On May 31, the ninth-seeded girls tennis team, with a regular-season record of 12-4, played in the Division 1 North tournament preliminary round and swept Malden 5-0. On June 2, they beat Methuen, 4-1 and on June 5, squeaked past Boston Latin 3-2 to advance to the semi-finals.

The boys tennis team went into the tournament seeded first in Division 1 North with an undefeated regular season record of 17-0. In the first round on June 1, they easily defeated Boston Latin for the third time this season, 4-0, before thunderstorms broke out.

On June 1 the boys lacrosse team, with a 14-6 regular-season record, won a hard-fought battle in the first round of the Division 2 East tournament. After starting off strong, scoring four fast goals in a row, the Marblehead defense, anchored by All-Star John Tobin, held the C-C attack to only two goals in the final three quarters of the game. Strong defense by C-C co-captain Eric Zuk, Peter Stone, Greg Gatti and goalie Peter Walters held Marblehead to six goals sending the game into overtime. With less than two minutes left in overtime play, the game was suspended due to thunderstorms. After the rain delay, it took only 24 seconds for C-C co-captain Jon Fincke to score his third goal of the afternoon with Concord-Carlisle winning the game, 7-6.

On June 5 the team won a quarter final victory at North Andover 9-8, this time in double overtime. With the lead switching hands several times during the game, North Andover scored to go ahead with less than three minutes left. With 17 seconds left in regulation time, C-C's J.B. Henderson scored to send the game into overtime. Senior Dan Castelline scored with 2:33 left in the second overtime to lead C-C to a 9-8 victory. In what promises to be an exciting rematch, C-C will play against Wayland, with whom they share the Dual County League Championship, in the semi-final round of the Division 2 East tournament today at 5 p.m. in Wayland.
