Fruit, glorious fruit
Students were pleasantly surprised last week to find a new feature in their usually spartan school cafeteria: a fruit cart. Fresh apples, bananas, and oranges, and canned peaches and pineapple are the same fruit that has always been available on the shelves of the lunch line. But because it is displayed in a different way, many students see it as a new treat.
The school ordered the cart after School Business Manager Steve Moore got the idea from a food conference he attended. The self-serve buffet was a hit with many students who went home excitedly telling their parents "Guess what the cafeteria has now?!"
Cafeteria staff hope students will continue to eat more fat-free, nutritious fruit once the novelty has worn off, as they look for new ways to market healthy foods to an appreciative customer base.
