Avoid unnecessary expenses

To the Editor:

I thought I was reading an early April Fool's joke when I read that the Board of Selectman would even consider spending $2.77 million to bury utility lines in the town's center ("Town explores plan to bury utility lines in center," March 2, 2006). My neighborhood is one that was designed with underground utilities, so I certainly appreciate the desire to remove the clutter of poles and wires in the center. But with our tax rate rising every year just to support the critical town services, I refuse to approve an additional increase for this elective and unnecessary expense.

A luxury we can live without

To the Editor:

Given that we will be facing a major school building program, perhaps without the customary support from the Commonwealth, it is this citizen's opinion that spending $2.77 million to bury the wires in the center of town is a luxury that we can live without. My experience with preliminary cost estimates for building projects is that they are almost always a lowball number so that the project can get started.

Town Clerk reminders

To the Editor:

The Annual Town Census was mailed to residents in early January and while the response has been excellent, we still have about 300 forms outstanding. Please return your Census as soon as possible, and if you have not received a Census form, call the Town Clerk's office at 978-369-6155 and we will be happy to send you one.

Also, we still have many dogs that have not been licensed for 2006. Chapter 140, Section 137 of the Massachusetts General Law and Article 13 of the Town of Carlisle General Bylaws require dog owners to register their dogs and provide proof of rabies protection on an annual basis. The deadline to register dogs without incurring the $20 fine is Friday, March 31. You may register your dog in person at the Town Clerk's office, or by mail. Please provide the dog owner's name and address, dog's name, sex (male, neutered male, female, spayed female), age, breed, color and proof of current rabies vaccination. If filing by mail, please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope, and check payable to the Town of Carlisle. The fees are $6 for spayed or neutered dogs and $10 for female/male dogs.

Thanks so much for your continued cooperation. As always, please call me at 1-978-369-6155 with any questions or concerns. Our office hours are 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. or by appointment.
