Permits and licenses may be denied for unpaid taxes
Carlisle may soon use a new technique to encourage residents to pay taxes promptly. At the December 13 meeting of the Financial Management Team, Town Treasurer/Tax Collector Larry Barton announced he will ask town officials who grant permits and licenses to withhold them until applicants have paid any taxes due. He may shorten the preliminary list of residents with unpaid taxes since some of the 340 unpaid bills have been outstanding only a short time. Currently there is over $300,000 in unpaid real estate taxes.
Previously, Barton has asked the town's tax counsel to issue a warning letter to delinquent cases, giving them 14 days to pay or face a "tax taking." He noted "this generally results in a lot of payments."
