Carlisle has a Farmers Market
Our first ever Carlisle Farmers Market last Saturday went off as flawlessly and miraculously as a pot luck supper, having just the right amount of food and variety. Like clockwork, around 7:30 a.m. we drove into the Kimball Ice Cream parking lot with trucks and cars laden with saw horses, card tables, cash boxes, signage and sundry wares. There we assembled under the bright yellow Farmers Market banner. Everyone present was filled with excitement and anticipation as we unloaded the produce, making suggestions on placement and display.
We had a total of eight vendors. Some of us sold speciality items like daylilies, gloriously abundant summer bouquets, honey (light, dark and comb), Carlisle-grown beef, garlic of several varieties and exquisite hand-painted note cards. Others of us offered a variety of vegetables, salad greens, herbs, and various related products including teas and oils, potted garden plants, gourds and baked goods both sweet and savory. Most of us had sold out the bulk of what we had by 10:30 but we remained until noon selling what little remained.
Much as we had hoped and imagined, the market became a meeting place for old friends and neighbors and a welcoming destination to those new to town. We caught up on the recent news of the town and introductions and connections were made. It was time well- spent for all who participated and we can only imagine that the market will grow each Saturday. Already for this week we'll add Carlisle Farmstead Cheese, a bread baker and and an egg vendor.
