CCHS students shine at Science Olympiad

The Concord-Carlisle High School Science Olympiad Team came in second place at the Massachusetts Science State Meet, held at Framingham State on Saturday, March 19. This was the first time in 15 years that the high school team has placed in the top three. Every team competitor earned at least a top-ten finish in their events.

From Carlisle, CCHS seniors Michael Hutson, Eva Jellison and Ravi Ramanathan all won gold medals. Sophomore Leigh Davis won a silver medal, and Freshman Brittany Fay earned a bronze. Other team members from Carlisle include: Jeff Pan, Christine Shaver, Zander Pease, and Emily Yu. From Concord, CCHS senior Karin Knudson and sophomore Kathryn Lesneski won gold medals.

The state competition was the final event of the season for the CCHS Science Olympiad team. About 30 students met once a week during the winter to prepare for and attend monthly regional competitions. Two thirds of the students then went on to compete at the state Olympiad.

The team was coached by Dr. Michael Vela, who teaches chemistry at CCHS. The Science Olympiad challenges student mastery of concepts in earth science, biology, chemistry, physics and structural engineering.
