Celebrate poetry at Gleason Library

John Hodgen, Jean Keskulla, George Stalker, and Sue Ellen Kuzma will read poems on the theme "Beasts Seen and Unseen" at the Gleason Library on Thursday, Feburary 24 at 6:45 p.m. The four poets will read from their own work as well as the work of Billy Collins, Linda Hogan, James Dickey, and many others. The program, sponsored by the Carlisle Cultural Council, is free. The public is invited to bring favorite poems to read. Refreshments will be served.

We're like them again, heads bent over
our feet to read the news, as they do when
they smell the trails visible to us

in the snow. Alongside the straight line
of the fox, back foot landing neatly,
exactly where the front paw stepped,
the double row from a fisher, bounding
past hemlocks, sniffing for porcupine,
and the cleft-hoof vee's of those devil

deer, sampling every green-leafed shrub
in reach, our sheathed, elongated feet
leave peanut-shaped indentations

as we walk along the margin of the page
to avoid defacing the notes, the music
winter writes, tune a little different every time.
