CCYS Girls U12 Lightning completed an undefeated season (6 wins and 2 draws) Saturday with a 5 - 2 victory over Somerville at Emerson Field. The Lightning carried the early play, as defenders Allie Forelli and Amy Wyeth stepped up often to keep the ball in the Somerville end. Lindsay Newton provided excellent connecting play. Campbell Hart opened the scoring on a smooth feed from Victoria Vierstra. Then Sarah Delong pounced on a rebound and pushed it past the Somerville keeper. Allaire Langford closed out the first half scoring by carrying Hart's throw-in down the left wing, finishing in the far right corner. The Lightning led 3-1 at half time. As the teams changed ends, the Lightning stepped up the pace, with Torie Tremblay, Maya Hurley-Wales and Margaret Waterman executing some picture-perfect combinations. Now it was Keely Hurd and Rebecca Miller who kept the ball in the Somerville end. Cookie Gittings made one of her patented runs up the left wing, but could find no one in the middle. Then Charlotte Clark assisted Vierstra on the Lightning's fourth goal, and late in the second half, Lia Howard streaked in from her right wing position to drive home a loose ball. Near the end of the game, Somerville scored on a breakaway, but it was too little, too late. All of the practice, hard work, and unselfish play paid dividends on Saturday, and throughout a very successful season.
