The 29th annual Old Home Day road races
Carlisle's annual Road Races received their first sponsor participation this year. Thanks to the coordinated generosity of Ferns Country Store and the Vitamin Water Company, we had the addition of cool Vitamin Water drinks for all runners, entertaining music, and the use of the Vitamin Water loudspeaker system to assist in the dissemination of announcements to the assembled runners/spectators.
The races were run on a pleasant, sunny, and cool morning. The two races were completed by 161 runners: 40 in the 5-mile race at 7:30 a.m. (28 male, 12 female), and 121 in the 1-mile race at 8:30 (72 male, 49 female). An addition to this year's race was a stopwatch/printer, which simplified and greatly enhanced the accuracy of the timing and results.
The 5-mile race's top 3 finishers were drawn from last year's top 4. Joe Carpenito (4th
Winning the women's division for the seventh time ('96,'98,'99,'01, '02, '03, '04) was course record-holder Kim Ratcliffe in a time of 34:43, 9th overall. She became the first person to win one of the races more than 6 times. Repeating this year as second-place finisher, in a time of 36:12 was Karen Ringheiser. Brita Gaffey finished in 3rd place in 39:01.
David Tobin, the 2003 2nd-place finisher, won the 1-mile race in a time of 5:20, besting Roy Bondurant's 5:30 and Andy Brown's 5:39. An interesting statistic is that out of the top 3 finishers in each race, only one person was not in the 15-19 age group.
Morgan Evans is the first female to cross the finish line in the one-mile race.
The women's 1st-place finisher, in a time of 6:34, was Morgan Evans, 8 seconds ahead of Karen Ringheiser, second place in the 5-mile race. The third-place trophy went to Amelia Barnett in 6:51. Karen and Amelia reversed their last year's finishing places.
Family participation was significant again in both races. There were 19 families (accounting for 69 of the total 161) with at least 3 members running this year. The Mariano family, whose participation dates back to the very first Old Home Day Races in 1976, had 6 members running; the Forellis had 5; the Bagshaws, Clarkes, Goreckis, Harrings, Littlefields, Watson-Badells and Zwerlings had 4; the Barnetts, Dions, Elwoods, Engdahl/Meyers, Lotanes, Nashes, Osbornes, Ratcliffes, Sherwoods and Youngs had 3.
Many thanks to the Carlisle Police for their excellent traffic direction and control, making both races safe for the runners, and Dori Davis for her continuing support as treasurer. Dave and Florence Reed deserve special commendation for their superb overseeing of Old Home Day, and adding new dimensions by the introduction of a soap box derby and hot air balloon rides.
The race wouldn't be possible without the following individuals, many of whom have volunteered their time and expertise year after year; sincerest thanks to Susan Bondurant, Newel Cantrill, Evelyn Caruso, Phil Conti, Kay Edelberg, Sarah Goldsmith (who provided the new/revamped signage), Anne Halvorsen, Ken and Marilyn Harte, Ellen Huber, Michael Hutson, Leslie and Rand Kmiec, Stan and Lynn Lucks, Frederika Perry and Sarah Siedlar. Also, special kudos to Sabrina Perry, my de facto race coordinator, who has volunteered countless hours of her time since the very first race in 1976, streamlining many forms and procedures and organizing the critical start/finish volunteers.
If anyone is due a participant ribbon or medal but was not at the awards ceremony to accept it, please call Ronald Kmiec at 1-978-369-6130.
