CEF/CSA auction funds Mac Lab, other technology aids
The fundraising success at the recent CEF/CSA (Carlisle Education Foundation/Carlisle School Association) auction in March has enabled the two organizations to donate $48,000 in learning materials and supplies to the Carlisle School. The bulk of the funds was raised by the live auction but also included over $5,400 raised by the "Wishing Tree." New this year, a live tree was hung with decorations listing specific needs which auction attendees could fund. Purchased items are children's literature for all grades, kindergarten cubbies, a kindergarten sand table, Unifix Cubes and playground balls. Included are fourth-grade picture books used for writing, reading and social studies curriculum and the replacement of deteriorated grade five core literature books.
Upgrading and enhancing the technology at the school was a "Fund a Need" goal for this year's auction and three large purchases were made through the auction funds. The largest is a new portable Mac Lab, a twin to the existing portable computer laboratory that is immensely popular and sought after. "One computer lab for nine grades isn't enough," noted Superintendent Davida Fox-Melanson at a meeting to discuss the use of the auction funds. In addition to the $32,000 to fund the lab, $4,000 was marked for replacement batteries for the laptops, and other computer accessories.
The second technology purchase was LX Probescopes kits for all grades. These are digital microscopes which enlarge and project microscope images, allowing whole classes to view the same image. The included software can record the image, and allow manipulation of the image (to speed up, repeat, or slow down, for example).
The final technology purchase is an In Focus X1 Projector which can be used to project information from a computer screen. Currently the school has six, and the additional purchase will result in one for each grade level, for the Mac Labs, the library, and the System Thinking teaching team.
The CEF/CSA Auction committee is already planning the next CEF/CSA Dinner Dance, with live and silent auction, in March of 2005 (date TBA). In addition to the exciting live auction they plan to have hundreds of silent auction items, many provided by the Carlisle School classes.
