DPW hopes to repair North Road this summer
The heavy rains that caused the washout on North Road (front page photo last week) are also preventing DPW Superintendent Gary Davis from beginning the repair. In a telephone interview earlier this week, Davis said the area is still under water and the continuing rain is adding to the problem, so not even a preliminary assessment is possible until the water goes down.
The culvert is out and North Road will continue to be closed until repairs are completed, yet Davis feels the project will be finished by this summer. Townspeople remember the Maple Street culvert repair job took about a year and a half, and a few are skeptical about the summer date, but everyone will have to wait until the area dries up enough to fully assess the problem, get the engineering work done and whatever other work may be recommended by the Conservation Commission. The culvert is in a wetland area and so will be under their jurisdiction.
What is needed at this point is patience and a dry spell.
