School offers alternative phys ed program
Physical education teachers Lynne Carmel and Margaret Heigl gave a presentation on a series of physical education "electives" to the Carlisle School Committee on January 21. Recognizing that some students would prefer to have alternatives to competitive sports during gym class, the team is testing a pilot program in two sections of eighth-grade students.
During the fall basketball unit, students who prefer alternatives had the choice of "Street Games" or yoga. Training for Street Games was funded by a grant from the Odden Pool, and was taught to the phys ed and recess teachers by Carlisle art teacher David Negrin. Games include Slap Ball, Punch Ball, Three Box Baseball, Hit the Coin, and Six Box Handball. In a memo sent home to parents of the students who choose the electives, the team explained they "created an opportunity for students to chose an alternative activity that focuses on lifelong fitness and wellness."
Future electives being considered include dance, strength activities, Tae Bo, step aerobics, kickboxing, and Pilates.
