CC girls U-10 Division 1 soccer team completes undefeated season
The CC Girls U-10 Division 1 soccer team, the Cyclones, finished the fall season with a record of 6-0-2. On their way to an undefeated season, the girls scored 22 goals while giving up only 7. The highlight of the season was the rematch with a very tough Westford team. Following a 1-1 tie with Westford in the first game of the season, CC came on strong to defeat Westford 2-1 and claim possession of first place in week six of the eight-game season. CC only trailed in games twice during the season, coming on with aggressive play to tie Wakefield in week four, and overtake Medford by a score of 6 -2 last Saturday to remain in first place and compete the undefeated season.
CC had a balanced offense with seven players scoring goals throughout the season. Leading goal scorers Abby Morss (8 goals), Andrea O'Brien (7 goals) and Jessie Castelline (3 goals) were always a threat in the offensive end. Tilly Barnett, Marin Epstein, Chloe Fross and Lindsey Verrill all scored timely goals when the team needed a lift. The CC girls played a skillful ball-control game which created many assisted goals, along with exceptional through-passing that led to numerous breakaways.
The defense was a particularly strong aspect of the team as all players took turns playing goal-keeper at some point during the season. The most experienced goal keeper was Naya Herman who made spectacular saves to preserve several wins. Exceptional tackling and general stellar defensive efforts were consistently shown by fullbacks Annie Bannon, Barnett, Fross and Verrill. The sensational midfield play of Castelline, Epstein, Charlotte Rankin-Higgins and Eliza Noyes kept the ball in the CC offensive end for most of the games. The passing and ball control skills of the halfbacks set up numerous goal-scoring opportunities for the ever dangerous strikers, Morss and O'Brien.
The girls worked hard and improved tremendously throughout the season. It is rare for a team to complete an undefeated season and these girls deserve a lot of credit for their spirited and competitive play. Coaches Dave Castelline and Noel Herman, along with all the other parents, send congratulations to the CC Cyclones for an inspiring season.
