Carlisle students score high on 2003 MCAS
Carlisle School Principal Andy Goyer told the Carlisle School Commit-tee on September 17 that the Massachu-setts Department of Education has released the long-awaited results of the spring MCAS (Massachusetts Compre-hensive Assessment System) tests. Although the school has not yet examined the results in detail, the numbers show that Carlisle students continue to score high, as in the past three years.
Students in grades 3-8 are tested in the spring on their mastery of math-ematics, English language arts, and science and technology/engineering skills depending on the grade level. "The school uses these tests as a tool," Goyer said. "It looks for trends not only in determining the effectiveness the school curriculum but also in seeing whether additional support would be helpful for certain individual students."
The numbers of students taking the tests in Carlisle's grades range from a high of 111 in last year's Grade 3, to 77 in Grade 6. Last year was the first year Grade 5 and Grade 8 students were tested on their performance level in science and technology/engineering. More information will be coming from the school when teachers and the administration have had a chance to examine the results. CSC member Fitzgerald said, "On the surface we can see an excellent program at the school and everyone should be commended." Superintendent Davida Fox-Melanson concluded the discussion reiterating that the school will analyze the results to see whether curriculim changes are needed.
