CCYS U-10 Girls are runners-up in playoffs
The C-C girls U-10 division third grade soccer team made an impressive showing this spring as they finished the regular season with a 6-1-2 record to win their division and qualify for the Commissioner's Cup playoffs. The C-C side started off strong with a great 2-1 win over Wilmington. The first goal came when halfback Eliza Noyes made a beautiful pass to halfback Marin Epstein who drove the ball into the lower left corner. Then minutes later, the powerful scoring combination of Abby Morss and Jessie Castelline made the score 2-0, when Morss beat a defender in the corner for the eventual game winner.
Later Saturday afternoon, the C-C team lost to a strong Wilmington team, 1-0. Despite out-shooting and out-playing Wilmington in the second half, the C-C team couldn't find the back of the net. However, fullbacks Tilly Barnett, Katie Benvenuti, Annie Bannon and Lindsey Verrill did an outstanding job of defending and preventing any serious scoring opportunities.
With a berth in the finals at stake, Sunday's first game against Revere was a pivotal game in the tournament. C-C dominated the game from the opening kickoff, playing well over 80% of the game on offense. Midway through the first half, the ever-present Marin Epstein skillfully knocked a rebound past the Revere goalie for a 1-0 lead. Although C-C didn't score again, aggressive play from halfback Charlotte "Buzz Saw" Rankin-Higgins and Janny Robinson kept the pressure on the Revere defense for the remainder of the game.
The finals were a rematch, C-C against the fourth graders from the Wilmington team. The game was well played by both squads and each team had several chances to score. Spectacular goal tending by Naya "spider woman" Herman turned back several scoring chances. C-C's best chance to score came midway through the second half when Jessie Castelline's shot was deflected wide by the Wilmington goalie. Once again the C-C defense was superb and offensive minded defenders Tilly Barnett and Lindsey Verrill helped create several scoring chances.
The C-C team finished the season with an overall record of 8-3-2 and runners-up in the Commissioner's Cup. Coaches Noel Herman and Dave Castelline are very proud of the way the girls played and improved throughout the season. The spirit, competitiveness and good sportsmanship displayed each week by these girls was special. Carlisle girls on the team included Jenny Robinson, Lindsey Verrill, Tilly Barnett and Marin Epstein.
