A busy day for contestants at Old Home Day 2003
Parade exceeds 15 minutes!
Spectators along the parade route were delighted by the creativity, spirit, humor and sense of community displayed by all of the participants in this year's OHD Parade.
Once again, this year's Parade Marshall was David "Bucky" Toher atop a horse wearing a mask of stars and stripes. His mount was joined by ten other beautiful horses, including two very cute miniature horses, and an adorable baby calf. The Carlisle Police Color Guard and the Carlisle Minutemen carefully stepped in behind them. The children of Carlisle turned out in record numbers as they propelled their decorated cycles, wagons, and scooters just ahead of the D.A.R.E. vehicle. Carlisleans also enjoyed many creative floats, handsome antique vehicles, and a full complement of fire engines.
Needless to say, the judges were faced with the daunting task of selecting a few winners from this very impressive array of entries. This was also the first year that a large silver trophy cup was awarded to the first place parade entry. The winner's name will be recorded on the base of the trophy and enjoy it until next year's winner takes possession. The finalists, with judges' comments, were:
1st place to Concord Street Grape Jam. By unanimous vote of the judges.
"Wow! Wonderful balloon grape clusters; great music."
2nd place to Great Brook Farm. "Celebrating a real feeling of community. Darling calves."
3rd place to Council on Aging Van a.k.a. "Streetcar Named Retire."
"Lots of spirit and interaction with the crowd."
Other Notable Entries:
Best Kids' Entry to Callahan's Kempo Karate. "Great demonstration; nice syncopation."
Best Vehicle to Carlisle Fire Dept. Restored Puddle Jumper. "Very well-kept; respectfully restored."
Best Historical Entry to Carlisle Historical Society Antique Hearse. "Tradition revisited; elegant."
Sweetest Calf Award to "Happy New Year's Eve" led by Sally Lakness. A seven-month-old, purebred Jersey wearing antique cowbell forged in Philadelphia in the 1800s (believed to be from the same foundry as the Liberty Bell). "Love to see farming returning to Carlisle."
Many thanks to this year's volunteers who assisted in keeping the parade running smoothly: Liz Orlando, Karen Ringheiser and Tracey Luiselli.
Sincere gratitude to all of this year's parade participants.
Old Home Day Art Show
The Old Home Day Art Show was a great place to "Get Together in Carlisle" this year. Thanks to the many volunteers who pulled the art show together, Carlisle was able to present the art and crafts of many local professional and budding artists.
Best in Show was awarded to Katrina Stropkay's painting of a cat and mouse. First place ribbons were given to Sydney Callahan in the K-4 division, Genna Carmichael in the 5-8 division, Laura Scholten in the 9-12 division and Nancy Pierce in the adults divison. Second place ribbons were awarded to Griffin Bishop in K-4, Owen Callahan in 5-8, Thomas Brennan in 9-12 and J. Stewart Roberts in adults. Third-place ribbons were given to Angela DeBruzzi in K-4, Kate Erickson in 5-8, Marshall Evans in 9-12 and Sarah Brophy in adults. Jack Bondurant was awarded the People's Choice ribbon by the popular vote.
Entertainment was provided by the students of Nancy Rovin: Henry and Erika Hedden, Brendan and Katie Nunan and Susannah and Alaric Krapf. Shelley Reeves' students Julia and Claudia Veitch, Adeline Bakewell, Makayla Barton, Sofia Palmer, Maggie Prentice and Emma Young also performed. Finishing up in the musicans' corner was Santo Pullara at the piano.
