Red Balloon receives national accreditation

The Red Balloon Nursery School was recently granted accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This prestigious recognition has been achieved by approximately 6% of early childhood programs nationwide.

NAEYC accreditation is a rigorous, voluntary process by which early childhood programs demonstrate that they meet national standards of excellence. Child care centers, preschools, kindergarten, and before-and after-school programs are eligible to seek NAEYC accreditation.

Programs seeking accreditation undergo intensive self-study, collecting information from parents, teachers, administrators, and classroom observations. They receive an on-site visit, conducted by early childhood professionals especially trained by NAEYC, to validate their self-study results. A team of national experts in Washington who grant or defer accreditation independently reviews all of this information. Accreditation is valid for three years.

The heart of the accreditation focuses on the child's experience, considering health and safety, staffing, staff qualifications, curriculum and physical environment. The greatest emphasis is on the children's relationships with the staff and how the program helps each child grow and learn intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally. The NAEYC certificate confirms that the school meets a national standard of excellence, and also gives the staff and school an opportunity for self-evaluation and long-term goal-setting.

The accreditation reflects the hard work and dedication of the teachers · Nancy Powers, Janet Blanco, and Jane Brewer. The parent board and membership have played a vital role in supporting the teachers and director to accomplish our goals.

The Red Balloon, in its thirty-first year, is a parent cooperative, giving parents a wonderful opportunity to experience first-hand what their child's day is like. The two-classroom school enrolls children from three to five years old. The school is located at 27 School Street in Carlisle. For more information, call 1-978-371-7023.
