Thanks for the fence replacement

To the Editor,

On behalf of the Carlisle Conservation Commission I would like to extend our grateful appreciation to all who helped with the repair and replacement of fencing at the Foss Farm Conservation Land parking lot on Saturday morning. It was a big task finished by 1 p.m. due to the invaluable assistance lent by members of the Carlisle Trails Committee, Gary Davis and his DPW staff, Bobby Dennison and his mechanical auger and members of the Carlisle community who responded to our request for help. Thank you all.

Koning submits resignation

The following letter was submitted to the board of selectmen at their meeting on September 10. It is reprinted here by permission.

Chairman Douglas Stevenson:

I regret to inform you that effective January 1, 2003, I will be retiring from the Carlisle Fire Department and as Civil Defense Director after forty-one (41) years of service. Twenty-five of those years I served as chief and four as deputy chief. I will be sixty-five in January, and the State of Massachusetts mandates retirement from the fire service at age sixty-five.

I have enjoyed serving the people of the town in my capacity as chief. I thank the selectmen, boards, committees and the citizens of the town for their overwhelming support over the years.

I have seen tremendous changes in the Department over the past forty-one years. Our small department of six Call Firefighters has grown to thirty. We have one of the finest medical and ambulance services in the area. The town has also grown, and we have met those needs with high standards of education, training and equipment.

I will miss the department and the people who serve under me, but I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with so many dedicated people.

Very truly yours,
Robert Koning
