Quotes from the selectmen's meeting
On the no-override budget:
"The Carlisle School meeting Saturday morning accepted the no-override budget and said they understand and would not seek more [funds]."
"I have real trouble with the [no raises for town employees] and you can't just wave a sign and make that go away."
"We've known for years [town employees] are underpaid ... I think it's very important to find a way to fund raises." Selectman Carol Peters
"Two full-time officers [will be cut]...We are going back to the 70s when the town had no coverage from midnight to 8 a.m., except weekends."
"Our firemen get $16.21 per hour when they go to a fire. That's pretty low."
On a proposed new override:
"There's not a single person in this room who ever believed we'd be asked to go to the polls again."
"I take pretty seriously the vote on the override....In my opinion we should not have any override at all."
"No means no. It doesn't mean maybe. It doesn't mean we want a discussion."
"No" is something a two-year old says."
On how to structure the budget:
"I disagree 100% with not funding the high school budget at least $91K. We should be fully committed to doing this."
"I support the allocation of $91,000 to the high school and the balance to town departments. I do not support any overrides." Larry Bearfield
