CC Spirit girls soccer beats North Reading, 3-1

After losing their first game in the final minute against Billerica (0-1), the CC Spirit Girls U12 Division 1 team rallied and took on North Reading on Saturday, April 13. North Reading arrived with only seven capable players. As a show of sportsmanship and to demonstrate that they can play with anyone in their division, the CC Spirit team played with relatively equal numbers and had four substitutes on the sideline. North Reading hustled hard and showed their ability in strong passing and keeping the ball away from CC players. With Carolyn Brown in net and defenders Alli Kustin, Mary Beth Gregoritch, Dani Searls, Molly Johnson and Emily Beinecke, all attempts on net were fended off. The first half ended 0-0.

When the second half began, North Reading jumped out early, beat our defenders and sent a difficult shot across to the opposite corner of the net giving North Reading the early lead. Minutes later, CC Spirit was awarded a direct kick approximately 20 yards from the goal. Defender Alli Kustin sent a powerful shot into the net requiring the North Reading goalie to step back into the net to receive. Unfortunately, the referee didn't call the goal; however, the CC Spirit players responded with a vengeance. Mary Beth Gregoritch sent a ball up the middle to Kate Boerma who directed it to speedy Center Tessa Bramhall who beat North Reading's goalie for a 1-1 tie. Within minutes of that play, midfielder Marissa Potter passed to winger Brittany Barrett who tallied another goal into North Reading's net. CC Spirit held off all counter attacks with strong play from their defenders now including Carolyn Brown and two tremendous one on one saves from goalie Emily Beinecke. To ensure victory, Catherine Bennett maneuvered past several players and forwarded the ball to Ally Langevin who made a move around a defender and then the goalie to notch the final goal.

CC Spirit 1 Westford 1

Playing on a sunny Saturday, April 20, with home field advantage, CC Spirit challenged previously unbeaten Westford. From the outset, CC Spirit showed their speed and ability to be first to the ball. The midfielders controlled play with Center midfielder Catherine Bennett moving the ball on the left side and sending a cross to the top of the goalie box. Winger Brittany Barrett notched a shot which hit a defender and Tessa Bramhall finished it off into the net. Westford rallied later in the first half with a tremendous shot from the side. First half ended in a 1-1 tie.

CC Spirit came out strong in the second half clearly dominating play and having the ball in Westford's half of the field. Our defense turned in their best performance of the season in the second half allowing Westford to only approach the net but not to challenge our other star keeper, Emily Beinecke. Alli Kustin was a standout in the sweeper spot along with her talented supporting crew of Carolyn Brown, Dani Searls, and Mary Beth Gregoritch. Ally Langevin had several shots on goal with one just nicking the post and going out of bounds. Westford's goalie played extremely well and defended against shots from wingers Eliza Epstein and Brittany Barret who were quick on the sidelines, Center Tessa Bramhall who continued to outrun defenders, and midfielder Marissa Potter who sent long throws and several shots in at Westford. While the final result was a tie, CC Spirit girls know that they can play with any team in their division!
