CCHS musicians rank with best in state

The following CCHS ninth graders have distinguished themselves by earning placement in the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Northeast Junior District ensembles. These students prepared a challenging solo audition which was performed for an adjudicator on January 19 at North Reading High School. Their selection was based on preparation and performance of their solo and memorization of scales. Placement in Junior District identifies these students as among the very best young musicians in Northeast Massachusetts.*

Christina Pong - viola

Meredith Boehm - trumpet

Brandon Dunton - tuba

Casey Freedman - flute

Bernard Kung - trombone

Christine Shaver - clarinet

The following CCHS students have distinguished themselves by earning placement in the prestigious Massachusetts Music Educators Association (MMEA) 2002 All-State Festival to be held this year in Danvers on March 14 through 16. To earn placement in the All-State Festival, these students must first earn placement at the senior district level and place in the top 50 percent of the membership in those ensembles. Then they are invited to prepare a completely different, much more difficult solo audition and perform once again for an adjudicator. This year's All-State auditions were held January 26, at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough. Selection to All-State is based on solo preparation and performance, memorization and perfomance of major and minor scales, and sight-reading performance (playing a piece that they have never seen). Fourteen CCHS students earned invitations to audition for All-State, and we are elated to report that 12 of them were selected to perform with the All-State ensembles at Symphony Hall in Boston on March 16. The CCHS 2002 MMEA All-State participants are:

Jazz Band

Jonathan Rogers - tenor saxophone

Caitlin McHugh - alto

David Ballard - tenor

Brian Lee - violin

Nicholas Rubenstein - horn

Stephen Yu - violin

Christopher Daniels - tuba

Meredith Eaton - flute

Roshni Khapadia - clarinet

Jessica Nock - trombone

Aaron Pinsky - horn

Maren Studlien - oboe

Of particular note is the fact that Meredith, Jessica and Maren are sophomores and Christopher is only a freshman. To achieve All-State placement at such a young age is a high compliment to their musicianship. Their musical future is indeed bright. It is also important to note that Aaron and Nicholas each earned first-chair (principal) honors, Aaron in the All-State Band and Nicholas in the All-State Orchestra. We can confidently claim that the two very finest high school horn players attend school at CCHS.
