Cyclists raise $5,700 for Red Cross

On Sunday morning, September 30 over 110 motorcycles converged at a private residence on Concord Road in Carlisle. Their mission was to donate money to the American Red Cross in support of their humanitarian efforts relating to the recent attacks on America.

A motorcycle ride had been organized over the previous two weeks by a small group of Concord and Carlisle motorcycle enthusiasts. They named the event the "911 Noble Eagle Ride". Each rider would donate $25.

At 11:50 a.m. riders started their engines and waited amidst the rumbling sound for the procession to begin. Minutes later, a police escort pulled out onto Lowell Road and led the orderly two columns of motorcycles to the Route 2 rotary going west. Police from Carlisle, Concord and Acton directed traffic to ensure safe passage for the riders.

After a ride to the summit of Mount Wachusett, the riders returned to the final destination, the Concord Rod and Gun Club. They enjoyed a cookout staffed by volunteers who served food and beverages that were donated by local businesses.

Bobby Irwin kicked off a brief ceremony that included a moment of silence in respect for the victims of the attack. He also recognized the thirteen organizers of the event.

Doug Chapman then announced the total amount raised and presented a three-foot check to a representative from the American Red Cross, Leslie McCulloch. Leslie then made a brief statement of appreciation and a description of where the funds will be spent.

Steve Kirk rode at the back of the pack with Eduardo and Barbara Mancini. As the group made its way west on Route 2, Kirk was impressed by the positive response from passersby. "Maybe it was the number of American flags moving down the road, but whatever it was, people were waving and cheering us on as we went by."

The organizers would like to thank all who participated and generously donated to this cause. Local businesses who donated food, beverages and services include: Stop & Shop, Bedford- Stop & Shop, Acton; Dunkin Donuts, Acton; Colonial Spirits, Acton; Millstream Liquors, Maynard; Main Street Liquors, Maynard; Loyer Imprinted Sportswear, Tyngsboro, Concord Rod and Gun Club, Concord; Crosby's Market, Concord; The Concord Ice House, Concord; Walden Liquors, Concord; and Roche Bros., Acton.
