First Religious Society welcomes an interim minister

The Reverend Diane Miller is joining the First Religious Society for the 2001-2002 church year. The Reverend Eugene Widrick is retiring at the end of August.

Diane has 25 years of ministerial experience. She began as an interim minister at the Follen Church in Lexington in 1975, then served for five years in a large urban church in San Francisco. She led the Unitarian Universalist Church in Belmont for 12 years, a period of dramatic congregational growth. Her formal education was at Macalaster College and Harvard Divinity School. Diane was awarded an honorary doctorate of sacred theology from Starr King School for the Ministry in 1996.

She has served as director of ministry at UUA headquarters, and as executive secretary of the ministerial fellowship committee. She has been a denominational leader, serving on the UUA Purposes and Principals Committee, the UU Historical Society Board, the Affirmative Action for Women in Ministry Committee, and the Common Ground conference where YRUU (Youth Religious Unitarian Universalists) was founded.

Diane lives in Belmont with her husband, Michael Durall, and their two teenage sons, Graham and Drew. Mike is a fundraising consultant with non-profit organizations and author of Creating Congregations of Generous People, published by the Alban Institute.

"We are delighted that Diane will be with us this year," says Bob Luoma, co-chairman of the church's Parish Committee. "We are looking forward to a great year," says Sally Naumann, co-chairman of the parish committee. "She will serve as an interim minister and will be with us for one or two years. This is standard practice in Unitarian Universalist churches after the conclusion of a long pastorate such as Reverend Widrick's."

Come and meet Reverend Miller at two open houses on Sunday, August 19, and Saturday, August 26, from 10 a.m. to noon. Light refreshments will be served. Regular Sunday morning worship and religious education classes resume on September 9 at 10:45 a.m.
