'Magic of Carlisle' OHD art show

It's time to create some magic! Get out those paintbrushes, modeling clay, pencils, cameras, etc. and make some magic for the Old Home Day art show. Any medium is welcome, and any age, amateur or professional, is encouraged to participate.

The art show is a fun and relaxed event where townsfolk can display their creativity and enjoy the work of others. This year, the show will be held in the Corey Dining Room at the school on Wednesday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

There is still time to volunteer in making this show magical. If you can give some time or perform some music during the show, give a call to Kerri Piette at 1-978-371-0365 or Peggy Wang at 1-978-369-4660.

Carlisle road races to run on July 4

The twenty-sixth running of the Carlisle Road Races will take place in the usual time slots as the first event of the day following the flag-raising which opens the Old Home Day celebrations. The routes will remain the same, starting and finishing at the entrance to elderly housing on Church Street. Registration and awards will be at the entrance to Corey Auditorium.

Course records are 25:58 (Tim Harte-'91) and 31:51 (Kim Ratcliffe-'96) in the five-mile race, and 4:42 (Tim Harte-'98) and 5:51 (Rennie Munson-'81) in the one-mile event.

The five-mile race will begin at 7:30 a.m. (registration and number pickup from 6:45-7:15 a.m.), followed at 8:30 a.m. by the one-mile race (7:30-8:15 registration).

The exact courses and prizes can be found on the entry blanks, which are available now at the Carlisle Library, Carlisle Post Office and Daisy's Market.

The only "official" runners (with numbers and eligible for prizes) are present and former Carlisle residents and town employees -- no friends and visiting relatives. All others are welcome to take part as unofficial runners and will be able to receive their times as they cross the finish line.

Early entry fees are $6 for adults, $3 for youth (19 & under) for each race. Race-day entries will be $8 for adults, $5 for youth. One of the impediments to a smoothly-run race, jeopardizing the OHD timetable, is late registration. Runners are urged to enter as early as possible to facilitate data entry. Pre-race entries must be received by the race director no later than July 3.

Race director this year will be Ronald Kmiec (1-978-369-6130, 94 Bingham Road). Additional volunteers are needed this year. Call Kmiec for further information or to help on race day. All jobs are over by 9:30 a.m.

Cartoonist to marshall OHD parade

This year's Old Home Day theme was inspired by the many ways we all know, see, feel or understand the effects our town has on our daily lives. OHD has always been our way of feeling and expressing the comfort that comes from Carlisle and these, our friends, as we come together for this special day.

This year, we wish to recognize that the "Magic of Carlisle" extends even beyond our borders in the many endeavors of those who once knew Carlisle as home. To represent our former Carlisle neighbors, we are proud to announce that Darby Conley, creator of the cartoon strip "Get Fuzzy," will serve as parade marshall this year. Conley's mother Maria still lives in town.

Hopefully, Conley and the many others who are Carlisle "magicians in absentia" will find their contributions reflected in the Old Home Day parade, always a treasured part of the proceedings.

It's pie-baking time

Dig out your rolling pins and get ready to make a pie for the annual Old Home Day pie contest! Bring your pie or pies to the basement of Union Hall between 9 and 10:30 a.m. on July 4. There are three divisions: fruit and berry, cream/chiffon/cheesecake and juniors (under 15). By noon, slices of pie will be ready for the hungry public to buy.

Old Home Day planning meeting

It's not too late to join our group of OHD planners. We need you. If you would like to volunteer to help for an hour or two on July 4, or if you would like to get together with your Carlisle friends and neighbors to plan some "old time" games, please do.

Our next meeting is set for June 17 at 5 p.m. in the Sleeper Room at 145 Church Street. For questions, or to volunteer, call Susan Evans, OHD chairperson, at 1-978-371-0880.

Calling all pets

Once again it is time to spruce up the spaniel, tuxedo the terrier, comb the cat and polish the turtle. The Old Home Day pet show will be returning this year on July 4, at 1 p.m. at the Carlisle Castle.

Your pet will be judged on appearance and behavior, and you will be asked to show off your "pet knowledge." The contest is low-key and fun, so come and let your favorite pet enjoy the limelight. Call Sarah Zezima at 1-978-369-8941 if you have any questions.
