Six towns and 38 firefighters were involved in a three-alarm fire at the residence of the Vicharelli family on Munroe Hill Road this past Friday, October 27. The fire was reported by a neighbor at 2:04 p.m. When the first fire crew arrived at 2:09 p.m., the roof was fully involved and Carlisle Fire Chief Bob Koning immediately called for a three-alarm response. While the presidential contest between Vice-president Al Gore and Texas Governor George W. Bush is likely to draw voters to the polls on Tuesday, it's the eight state-wide ballot questions that are likely to keep them there. Town clerk Sarah Andreassen urges all residents to bring along their completed "cheat-sheets," available in the red Voters Guide mailed to all residents or on page 19 of this issue, due to the large number of contests and length of the ballot questions. In a stellar example of living their values, Jack and Betty Valentine of Acton Street have granted a conservation restriction "in perpetuity" on 10.2 acres of scenic pastureland on the southeast corner of the intersection of Acton and West Streets. The restriction, which was approved by the selectmen at their October 24 meeting, is granted to the Carlisle Conservation Foundation and specifies that the "primary purpose of this conservation restriction is to maintain the premises as an open field presenting a scenic, open, pastoral vista to travelers along West and Acton Streets. ...more
