After operating for several months with the help of two seasoned but temporary members, namely Claire Wilcox and Steven Spang, the Carlisle Conservation Commission returned to full strength. In a very tight job market, Concord-Carlisle High School administrators began a process last spring which culminated in the hiring of 25 new teachers for the 2000-01 school year. A document submitted to the Regional School Committee gives some explanation for the large number of vacancies: three teachers had taken child-bearing or child-rearing leave, three had taken a leave of absence, two were on sabbatical, seven resigned and five retired. ...more

Last year, when the Annual Town Meeting approved $6,317,704 for the Carlisle School, a sum agreed upon by the school committee, all were aware that there was a $58,803 shortfall of the level service budget request. In order to maintain level services at the school, that sum needed to be realized through revenue enhancement programs. Fees were instituted for school activities and busing and fees were increased for the use of school facilities by outside organizations. However, school business manager Eileen Riley reported there is an additional unanticipated shortfall of $11,957 at this time because the school is paying the salary of an additional fifth-grade teacher. ...more

Deborah W. Meier, founder and principal of the Mission Hill School in Boston, will address the Carlisle Lunch Group on Monday, November 6 at the First Religious Society at 12:15 p.m. Meier is a nationally known authority on public education, based upon her three decades working in public education as a teacher, writer and public advocate. She is a recipient of a 1987 "MacArthur genius" award. Her books, Will Standards Save Public Education and The Power of Their Ideas, are on reserve at the circulation desk in the Carlisle Public Library for reading. ...more

Let me tell you about my weekend. On Saturday, October 14, 2000, we left our home at seven in the morning. We wanted to catch the first launch at 8 a.m. from the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead to our Catboat, TAMBOURINE, moored in Marblehead Harbor. It was a beautiful morning. We had had our first frost already, and this was a beautiful Indian Summer morning. It was the first time in weeks that I had been out to the boat without having my knees knock in the cold air and my hair blown straight back from the brisk fall wind. So, do you think we were finally going for a pleasant weekend sail? No, we were going out to remove the sail from our boat because the season is over and the boat is being trucked home next week. Perhaps you might get a glimpse of TAMBOURINE coming down the road on a flat bed to spend the winter in the back yard. Picture this: it's a perfect sailing day and the two of us are trying to stuff 372 square feet of sail into a duffel bag. Talk about stress. ...more

Columbus Day weekend brought the Pig 'n Pepper back to the area for a weekend of food, music and all-around fun. This marked the tenth edition of the Pig 'n Pepper, which has grown from a one-day event held at Great Brook State Park to the current two-day festival, held for the first time this year at the 4H Fairgrounds in Westford. ...more
