Girls soccer, U12 take first place
The GU12-1 soccer team rolled over Medford 7-0 and Tewksbury 2-0 to take the lead in the Middlesex League. The 6-2-1 Blue rocked against shell-shocked Medford scoring goals when goals were no longer needed. Elise Lehotsky got things cooking with a sweet assist to Jamie Longo for the first score. This was followed in rapid succession by an Anna Parrott assist to Nora Bussolari, scores by Sam O'Keefe and Sarah Franklin (from Stevie Pearl), and two by plucky tallies from Ducky Andrewes. The aging-impaired head coach was unable to remember the author of the seventh goal. The defense, rousingly led by Sarah Takvorian and Julie deJesus, smartly moved the ball to open spaces feeding midfielders Abbie Rolando and Ariel Morrison who kept the ball in the offensive zone.
Tewksbury, undefeated in two years and (formerly) leading the league, then lost 2-0 in a game that could have been 5-0. The stunned Tewksbury side was down two goals within ten minutes with Lehotsky cashing booming crosses from Longo. Damara Hawley was awesome at sweeper juking by oncoming attackers with confident moves causing the opposing coach to ask, "Who IS that sweeper?". Julie Gray and Ashley McManama kept up the pressure on offense, creating many additional opportunities. Emily Cote and Sarabeth Henderson were immense, smothering the fast Tewksbury wings and stopping the potent offense before it could get untracked. With one more win, the girls will be headed to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions in late June, to vie for the U12 State championship.
