Mite-One takes Northstar crown

The Concord-Carlisle Mite-1 Hockey Team captured the playoff championship in their division of Northstar Hockey League, with C-C's run of four straight playoff wins.

C-C opened the playoffs with an exciting 4-3 overtime win against the number five seed, Midstate. Kevin Haley scored two goals; Joe Feeney had one and Paul Keane scored the winner in overtime on a solo rush. Abby Ostrom, Haley and Pat Cadigan had assists. Goalie Kirby Sundquist stoned Midstate on several great opportunities.

In the second game, C-C shut out number six seed, Medfield, 3-0. Sundquist was spectacular in goal. Defensemen Tom Ferguson, Eric Luby, Henry McNamara, Eric Benvenuti and Keane were flawless in cutting off the Medfield attack. Feeney had two goals and Haley had one. Benvenuti and Haley had assists.

In the third game, C-C took on number two seed K.P./Walpole. C-C played one of its best games of the year. The combination of Cadigan, Ostrom, Kayla Maple and Neal Sullivan played a great game. They were fast and aggressive. C-C goals came from Feeney (two), Haley and Cadigan. Goalie Sundquist was strong again.

In the championship game, C-C took on number one seed, Triboro. C-C came out flying. Feeney opened the scoring with a pretty backhander assisted by Haley and Cadigan. C-C went up 2-0 when Haley out-skated a Triboro defender, broke in alone and slid one on the ice into the far corner. Just 1:30 later, Haley made it 3-0, when Feeney sent a pass out from the left corner and Haley wristed it high to the shot side. Keane put C-C up one with a solo rush, down the middle, finishing with a hard wrist shot to the far corner. Haley's hat trick made it 5-2. Mike Fabrizio made a great play behind the Triboro goal to break up the play and get the puck to Haley at the left post and he jammed it in. The second period ended with C-C up 5-2.

Triboro came out strong in the third period and got the score to 5-4. If not for the superior goaltending of Sundquist, C-C would have been in big trouble. He stopped two clean break-ins to frustrate Triboro.

Triboro pushed hard but C-C held strong to take the championship game 5-4. The players were presented championship plaques in a post-game ceremony.
