The new Fitness Center at Concord-Carlisle High School is filled with students using Nautilus equipment for their work-outs on a recent morning. The Fitness Center, just opened this year, has an assortment of treadmills, stair climbers, bench presses, rowing machines, stationary bicycles and weight training equipment for student use. It was created by combining the old weight room, a dance room and a storage closet in the high school gym. "The old weight room was so archaic it was dangerous and we didn't use it," says Andrea Gillis, Health and Fitness Department Chair. ...more

Christina Campasano got credit for her Senior Wellness Project by taking aerobic kickboxing at Gold's Gym. "Keeping fit and maintaining good health is important," she said, "especially for teenagers." The Wellness Project, a unique program started three years ago at Concord-Carlisle High School, gives students credit for setting and achieving their fitness goals. The project gives seniors the opportunity to design their own personal fitness plan, in lieu of traditional gym classes. ...more

As part of comprehensive health awareness, students at Concord-Carlisle High School take health education classes in their freshmen and junior years. Health and fitness instructors teach health education topics in classrooms. For freshmen, health education includes information on good nutrition, the use and abuse of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and also human sexuality. Students also learn about media influences, eating disorders and how to manage stress. ...more
