After interviewing the last two finalists for town administrator in a public meeting last week, the selectmen are now trying to determine the best candidate for the job. In the course of the interviews, the board voiced their hopes for the future town administrator. Among the accomplishments the board wished to see over the next few years were better leadership of the town employees and more unification of the different town boards. ...more

Selectman and town moderator are just two of the prominent town offices for which candidates will be sought for election this year. The first formal step in the process, the town caucus, will be held on Monday, March 20, at Town Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m. and lasting just long enough to hear nominations for candidates interested in running for election on May 9. ...more

Katrina Proctor, who has served as administrator for the Carlisle Conservation Commission for the past four and a half years, has submitted her resignation, effective the end of April. She and her husband are embarking on a business venture in her hometown in Lunenburg, and Proctor said that the time was right for leaving. ...more

The Carlisle Police have been called in to investigate a matter of serious vandalism at the Carlisle Middle School. As stated in a letter from principal Andy Goyer and superintendent Davida Fox-Melanson that was sent home to all students on March 14, "Graffiti threatening the safety of the school appeared in the Wilkins boys' bathroom." Carlisle made its presence known at the Destination Imagination (DI) regional trials held in Bedford on Saturday, March 11. Two seasoned Carlisle teams finished first in their respective divisions and will go on to state competition in Hopkinton on Saturday, April 8. ...more

The conservation commission has received a preliminary look at the latest proposal for use of the former Saint Irene Church site on Bedford Road. North Middlesex Savings Bank bought the lot last year in hope of establishing a Carlisle branch office, a plan that was rejected at Town Meeting, and is now proposing to raze the present structure and build a 3,000-square-foot single family dwelling. Since much of the construction will take place within two 100-foot wetland buffer zones, the bank's engineer Jeff Hannaford of Morse Environmental Services presented a site plan for first-pass consideration by the commission on March 9. ...more

The conservation commission has slapped a dual fine on Boston Gas Company and Chip Orcutt, owner of property at 1 River Road. The site was turned down last year as a possible cell tower location, in part, because it contained an illegal underground oil tank. Once the offending tank had been removed, Orcutt contracted with the utility to install a gas line to the small business office on the property. ...more

As the plastic "tents" come down from the sides of the Gleason Library Building at 22 Bedford Road, the masonry work is being finished and the roofing is almost complete. Inside the building, the wallboard has started to go up and rooms have begun to take shape. ...more

The conservation commission has informed the selectmen that they would support a stand-alone Warrant article to place a conservation restriction on those portions of the Conant Land not set aside for affordable housing or expansion of the Town Hall or fire station. The vote came at the commission's regular March 9 meeting, where the sentiment of the members strongly favored preservation of the tract but made it clear that they were taking no position on the affordable housing issue. Groans seemed to be the response of everyone present, the administrative team, curriculum coordinators and teachers, when Carlisle School Business Manager Eileen Riley presented solutions to maintaining the funding for the school's "level service" budget. Riley said she hopes "to spread the impact evenly and avoid affecting direct educational services to students." The gap between the amount reached in the school's compromise with the Carlisle Finance Committee and selectmen is approximately $60,000. ...more

To introduce the presentation of the foreign language curriculum, the Carlisle School Committee meeting on March 7 was treated to a skit in Spanish performed by two seventh graders, Beth Whalley and Laura Clarn. The flair and enthusiasm of the two girls for the language were very apparent and made the skit impressive, entertaining and enjoyed by all those present. ...more

The Massachusetts School Choice Program had its public hour Tuesday, March 7. Time was set aside at this regular school committee meeting for townspeople and the school population to discuss and learn about this complicated program, in which the Carlisle Public School has never voted to participate. ...more

"A lot has been happening at the school," Superintendent Davida Fox-Melanson told the Carlisle School Committee and assorted staff on Tuesday, March 7. Among other news, the superintendent reported about a plan for the crowded playspace at the school, Carlisle School Association grants and the tightening up of notification for school absences. ...more
