Student instrumentalists and vocalists qualify for district festival
The Carlisle School's music department is pleased to announce that 12 instrumentalists and, for the first time, three vocalists, have been accepted into this year's Massachusetts Northeast District Junior Festival. These orchestra, chorus, and band ensembles are comprised of selected students in grades 7-9 from over 80 middle schools and junior high schools throughout northeastern Massachusetts. Carlisle musicians performed a rigorous audition at North Reading High School on January 22, and those accepted will rehearse during the week of March 20 and perform a concert in Lowell on Saturday, March 25.
Accepted into the orchestra were Jason Lee, seventh-grade cellist (with the second highest audition score for cello); Charlotte Siegel, eighth-grade trumpeter; Jessica Nock, eighth-grade trombonist; and Meredith Eaton, eighth-grade flutist. It is highly unusual for so many eighth-grade wind players from one school to be asked to perform with the festival orchestra; these positions are traditionally reserved for ninth graders because of the extensive musical and technical demands of the music.
Band members will include clarinetists Christine Shaver and Susan Modeen; trombonists Jacqueline O'Kelly and Elizabeth Cheever; flutist Stephanie Abend; oboist Jennie Siegel; alto saxophonist Ben Phillippo; and Chris Daniels, who received the highest score for all auditioning tubists.
The Carlisle Middle School Chorus had three members chosen: Jennifer Fantasia, Aaron Marks and Adam Weiss. These selections are especially noteworthy considering that the chorus is still in its formative stages (22 members), and that these students, as well, are only in seventh grade. Chorus director Angela DiPace was tireless in her efforts to coach all of the auditioning vocalists.
Other students who conscientiously prepared their audition material but, unfortunately, were not chosen for this year's festival included Megan Lyons on oboe; Jennifer Zuk on flute; Brian Yu on trumpet; Rachel Schneebaum on clarinet; Cherag Kapadia on alto saxophone; and chorus members Samantha O'Keefe and Cheryl Davis.
Tom O'Halloran is the Carlisle School instrumental music director.
