24th Annual Old Home Day Road Races

A total of 134 runners (breaking last year's record of 116) completed the two races: 43 runners competed in the five-mile race at 7:30 a.m. (12 female), 91 in the one-mile race at 8:30 (36 female). It was a fine day for runningsunny with temperature in the mid-70's, thankfully not too humid.

Course record-holder (25:58, '91) Tim Harte won this race for the seventh time in its 24-year history, repeating last year's finish in the five-mile race. He finished 2:33 ahead of Robert Ratcliffe's 28:44 with a time of 26:11, just 13 seconds off his record. Tim, who finished the Boston Marathon in 2:27 (38th place), won the five-mile in 1985, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1997 and 1998 and has now passed Ronald Kmiec, race founder and co-director, who won six times between 1976 and 1989. John Dalton, race co-director and winner of the race for five consecutive years (1992-96) finished in third place in 28:51. John and his family will be leaving Carlisle to resettle in Toronto, Canada. Bon voyage, John, and thank you for the eight years of help with the races.

Winning the women's division for the third time was course record-holder Kim Ratcliffe (31:51, '96) in a time of 33:49, ninth overall, never challenged, and 4:14 ahead of the 38:03 time of second-place finisher Alicia Andre, who won this race three previous times1991, 1995, and 1997. Claudia Talland was third with a time of 40:43. Bravo to last-place finisher Sandy Nash for her perseverance and courage in running this race while eight months pregnant. She's anticipating that the experience will help guarantee superior athleticism and an athletic scholarship some day.

The one-mile race saw the entry of Jesse Woods, a top finisher for the past several years in both races, into the first place slot with a time of 5:11. There have been only eight sub-5:00 finishes in the past 24 years, four by Tim Harte and four by Graham Lucks, both of whom opted for the five-mile race only this year. In second place was Sean Carroll-Cronin in 5:48, followed in third by Eric Pederson's 6:03.

The women's division was an exciting and extremely close race, with the three top finishers one second apart! Jazen Jacobellis ('96 & '97 winner) won with a time of 7:06, holding off Liza DeBruzzi (7:07) and Sam O'Keefe (7:08). Adding a little personal interest was the wonderful gesture of sportsmanship by Alexandria Alberto, sacrificing her placing in the race when she stopped to help a fellow runner in distress.

An interesting sidelight: there were nine families with at least four members running this yearthe Albertos, Barretts, Brophys, Careys, Kilfoyles, Stengrevicses, and Youngs with four, the Cooks and Marianos with five. The Marianos had three generations running, with Anthony, Sr.'s, Tony's, and Chris' participation dating back to the very first Old Home Day Races in 1976.

If anyone is due a participant ribbon, please call Ronald Kmiec at 369-6130. Apologies to any whose names were misspelled and for any other errors inadvertently contained herein. Next year's race will be a significant milestone reached, 25 years, and among the special things planned are commemorative t-shirts for all pre-registrants.
