The Oak

Branches on the big oak

stretching like a spider

walking on its web.

For eternity it stands

like a person

waiting for a loved one.

Leaves greener than any emerald.

In winter it's sad

summer it's very glad.

Waiting for the frightening day

it might fall.

Only the stump will be left.

Phillip Dumka is eight years old. Now a third-grader in the Carlisle School, Philip recently shared this poem with his former second-grade teacher Linda Clark, who fostered his inclination to write poetry.
