Girls soccer U14 win one, lose one
The Concord-Carlisle Patriots Girls Under-14 Division 1 team hosted the Melrose GU14-1 team in a rescheduled game on Thursday and traveled to Wakefield for a second game on Saturday.
The first game started with an early goal by Rachel Williams on a pretty pass from Kelly Robb for the only goal of the first half. The ball bounced in Concord-Carlisle's direction in the second half with Susie Martin scoring on a corner kick which went into the Melrose goal off of a Melrose player. Dana Tsakos scored on another good pass from Robb and Susie Martin scored on a long drive from a throw-in by Emily Rolando. Whitney Sharp then scored the last two goals, the final one on a shot from thirty feet out which she tucked in under the left side of the cross bar. Patriots goalies Emily Rolando and Becca Perry combined for the 6—0 shutout.
The Patriots played the game on Saturday with only ten players to Wakefield's eighteen. Wakefield scored first, but Susie Martin scored for Concord-Carlisle on a penalty kick nine minutes later. The home team was stunned when Martin scored her second goal just two minutes later putting the Patriots up by a goal at half time. In the second half, Wakefield swarmed all over the Patriots' half of the field, but it took a direct kick after a foul outside the penalty area for them to score their second goal. The game was tied 2—2 at the end of regulation time; however, the referee added time and just before the final whistle, Wakefield scored the winning goal on a clean break-away against a tenacious but exhausted Patriots defense of Hannah Brady, Kylie Duff and Dana Tsakos. Becca Perry made seventeen saves to keep her team in the game.
The Patriots are now 4-3-2 and remain in third place in their division for the spring season.
