Day care center increases enrollment
At the May 15 board of appeals meeting, Lillian DeBenedictis received a one-year special permit to expand enrollment at the Children's Place day care center at 54 Carleton Road. The number will grow from 25 to 29 children.
DeBenedictis reviewed for the board the severe shortage of day care services in town. Two family day care operations (up to ten children each) went out of business recently. The Children's Place has a 90-percent enrollment of Carlislean offspring. Under state regulations, the facility has a license for 31 children, but prefers to house 29 at this time.
The board also considered letters from three residents in the neighborhood opposing the increase, based on traffic concerns during the drop-off and pick-up of the children. In a compromise decision, the board elected to issue a special permit for one year only. The Children's Place will need to address traffic issues successfully or they may have trouble renewing the permit next year.
